Persia was ruled by the Safavids since 1501 and they established Shia Islam as Persia's official religion but by 1722, they had lost much of their power and political influence. Then, in 1925, the Pahlavi dynasty claimed the title of Shah and aligned themselves with the west. The Islamic Revolution of Iran occurred in 1979 and was led by Ayatollah Khomeini, who claimed Iran was becoming too westernized. His kingdom was not seized with normal military tactics. He gave bold speeches reported by the newspapers to gain people's support and intrigue. He was never given the honor of royalty, because a theocratic republic was formed. It revived the Shiites and today they are among the most powerful in the region.
